Jerry Valentine
Vice President & Creative Director
Q: Tell us what it is you really do here.
A: I co-lead the Creative Department, managing and motivating our designers with copywriters – my main responsibility is directing the visual aspect of our work, ensuring it always resonates with our audience. As Vice President of PMG, I help guide the vision for our agency and make day-to-day business decisions.
Q: How did you decide on graphic design for a career?
A: When I was in high school I wanted to be an art teacher, but my guidance counselor pointed me toward graphic design. She said I’d have better opportunities to make money faster, all those practical things guidance counselors tell you. But I discovered that graphic design was truly fascinating and rewarding -- in many ways, I did get to be an art teacher.
Q: What things did you do in the past that prepared you for this job?
A: During my first semester at Columbia College I was awarded an apprentice job that gave me the opportunity to work with some very talented people who taught me good values and work ethics. Also, making LOTS of mistakes taught me LOTS of things!
Q: So you’re a huge music buff. What are your top 5 bands?
A: My favorites change all the time, because I really get into listening to new sounds… bands that no one else has ever heard, before they’re discovered. Then once they hit it big, I’m over them—I’m fickle! Although, I do have a sweet spot for late ‘70s New York punk and early ‘80s new wave.
Q: You’ve been in the business for a long time. How do you keep yourself inspired?
A: I’m a very visual person, so I love to travel with my partner to see other places globally. Love how people interact in different countries, how they dress and their art. Music is another way I get inspired, never without my iPod. I also try to see new bands whenever possible.

Jerry is an astonishingly talented caricature artist, but he doesn’t draw just anyone. We worked together for 10 years before he finally gave me my own portrait.”
