Janessa Knodt

Senior Copywriter

Q: Tell us what it is you really do here.

A: I think profound, strategic thoughts. I stare blankly at my computer screen. When I have writer’s block I write nonsensical blogs to dust off the cobwebs. And along the way I suppose I solve a creative problem or two! It’s like a game for me—I love it. Especially since I get to work with fabulous designers who inspire me daily.

Q: How did you decide on copywriting as a career?

A: When I was in college at UC San Diego I was a creative writing major. But to pay the bills I worked as a floral designer/manager at a flower shop. My favorite part of the job was making the business decisions… thinking of new ways to get people to buy our product. As I mentioned, solving those problems was like play for me. So I found a way to combine my major with my passion, and POOF! Copywriter.

Q: What things did you do in the past that prepared you for this job?

A: You know, my creative writing background almost hurt more than it helped when it came to copywriting. I’ve tried to unlearn my instincts to be flowery with language, or even to use proper grammar! (In this business, you gotta “talk it” rather than “write it”). I’d say I’ve always had a natural business sense, entrepreneurial spirit and creative problem solving ninja skillz. And my professional experience over the last six years has only sharpened those skillz to a deadly point! So watch out!

Q: We’ve been told you also have some “skillz” of the floral variety?

A: Yeah, me and flowers go way back. Back to the Motherland, in fact! My family has been in the flower business for generations, so I suppose it’s in my blood. I’ve got a good eye for design, and in a way I use the same techniques to concept flowers for a wedding as I do to create print ads. There are unlimited ways to go about any creative endeavor… it’s all about moving forward with the right one for the right client!

Q: Is it true that you drink literally everything through a straw?

A: Everything. Water. Coffee. Red wine. I don’t discriminate. I’m an equal-opportunity user of straws. It’s the civilized way to drink. Don’t you think?
