Ikuko Aoki-Salinas

Senior Designer

Q: Tell us what it is you really do here.

A: I think (mix up thoughts) > concept (squeeze my brain) > sketch (spit out ideas) > design (shape). I have been doing this for 9 years. I enjoy playing both in the print and interactive worlds.

Q: How did you decide on graphic design for a career?

A: Since I was little, I always loved art and writing (in Japanese). I just loved the idea of creating something original from scratch. When I found out about graphic design I was very excited because I can communicate and solve problems through art!

Q: What things did you do in the past that prepared you for this job?

A: I majored in Graphic Design at Columbia College here in Chicago. Then I worked as a lead designer at another marketing firm for a long time before I came to PMG. But besides the education and work, I have been always paying attention to Art and Design in different forms and shapes. Also, I believe my Japanese cultural background plays a big role in my design.

Q: You’re originally from Japan. What city are you from, and what is it like?

A: I’m from Utsunomiya—a capital city in Tochigi prefecture, and pretty big. What I love about the city is easily accessible to both urban areas such as Tokyo and rural country areas. And, importantly, Utsunomiya is most well-known within Japan for Gyoza (Japanese pot-stickers). To prove my point, there is a Gyoza statue in front of Utsunomiya station. Of course I LOVE Gyoza!

Q: Do you do anything artistic outside of work?

A: Yes, I am a print maker! I have been doing various types of printmaking such as Relief, Monoprint, Lithography, and Etching. I love printmaking because the process is very opposite of “computer” graphics work, and it stimulates different part of brain. Also, I believe it helps me to stay creative too.

When I think of Iko, I think of a fine artist who applies her techniques to graphic design. She has an incredibly unique style that layers colors, patterns, textures, merging together into a living background—she makes stories come to life.”
